Beyond Climate Featuring David Suzuki

Climate change is affecting our daily lives. For instance, Mount Robson is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies; the snow has decreased due to climate change.

David Suzuki, a scientist, and broadcaster, advises that governments should not forego climate change since we cannot elevate the economy above the things that keep us alive.

Peter Lantin, a resident of the Haida Nation, which has the world’s most giant trees, says they are now feeling the effects of climate change after 36 days without rain in 40 years.

Whistler Blackcomb, which receives over 2 million tourists annually, has tasted its fair share of the effects. The snowline has been going up, and they have to do more snowmaking, putting reeves higher, more summer grooming for over a decade and a half due to climate change.

The Okanagan Valley has been experiencing floods and droughts due to changes in the Snow Park and precipitations which affect peoples’ homes, food production, and many other facets of life in the valley known for its wine production.

Forests are experiencing more fires due to climate change by creating more lightning storms and making forests hotter and dryer, which enhances the spread of wildfires when ignited by humans or lightning-like what happened in Kelowna Province in British Columbia.

Forest fires have brought out forest insect outbreaks like the Mountain Pine Beatle from Western Canada, which killed over 50% of commercial pine in British Columbia and infected over 18 million hectares of forests today.

These are just examples revealing we are burning fossil fuels at an alarming rate, thus producing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which cause climate change to the air.

Carbon sinks like trees and oceans are overwhelmed by the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. For instance, the carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and oceans dissolves into acids in the oceans, making oceans acidic.

In the Pacific and the Provinces, streams are warming, making the Salmon fish a source of food and sustainable livelihoods, have migrated over 3000 km.

Vancouver is an example of a city supporting the green cities movement by opposing fossil fuels development and shipping. And more than 2,000 cities worldwide are already benchmarking on policies that have helped the city on the journey, which has helped Vancouver rank as the highest quality of living city on earth.

Bottom Line

We have to work together to reduce carbon emissions everywhere because the effects affect everyone and still for the next generation. We have to give back to nature.
