Bike Commuting Essentials- Don’t Commute Without These!
If you were to become a bike commuter, you might be wondering what things you need to carry with you.
A bike. A good bicycle which is appropriately working: good brakes, properly inflated tyres, and a well-oiled chain.
If you are looking to buy a new specialised commuter bike, I would advise you to wait. Practise with a borrowed/rented bike first. Learn more about your personal stamina, your commute, the terrain, your preferences, hand positions, and different riding positions. Assess whether you prefer riding fast or slow. Finally you will be well prepared to walk into the bike shop, and know precisely what you are looking for.
Lights. I recommend having lights at the front and rear; having them on day and night to give you extra visibility and confidence.
Helmets. You will need a helmet to keep your head safe. You will not mind something hitting your helmet, but you will mind something hitting your head. For instance, branches hanging from trees.
A backpack/ basket. Both can be great but have different advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages of a backpack | Advantages of a basket |
Simplicity. | Comfortable ride. |
Can be used when not on the bike. | Less sweat. |
Disadvantages of a backpack | Disadvantages of a basket |
More sweat | Some look silly when not on bike. |
Less riding comfort. | Changes how you handle your bike. |
Basically, it just has to be something that can carry everything you need; a laptop, clothes, etc.
Basic tools. You will need some essential tools. Ideally a multi-tool which can adjust your seat, your handlebars , or tighten up your wheels.
You may need to deal with a flat tyre, so you will need:
Spare inner tube.
Mini pump. To remove the tyres from the rim.
Tyre levers.
Sometimes a puncture kit is a good option because it’s small and affordable.
Water. It’s a good idea to carry water while cycling.
Bike lock. It can be a chain lock or a d-lock. Cable locks are unadviseable because they are easy to cut and therefore not very dependable.
A bell. It’s a great way to inform people who do not see you coming.
A mirror. If you are not a complete beginner, you might not really need a mirror.
